Kamari is one of the major beach holiday resorts in Kos and is on the south-west corner of the island, not far from Kos airport.
The resort gets a mixed response from holiday visitors but many find Kamari an excellent family holiday destination.
Kamari is not a settlement as such but the main beach area of the inland hill village of Kefalos that sits above the bay and where most of the holiday accommodation is found.
The beach area at Kamari is very long, at about five kilometres, and it's a mixture of sand and shingle with most of the stones found at the harbour end of the beach, nearest to Kefalos.
The best sand is found further east along Kamari beach with the sandiest spots at the Agios Stefanos end of the shoreline where a large hotel complex is based.
The long beach means that it rarely seems crowded even at the height of the summer season and there are good stretches of sand to be found along its whole length.
The sands at Kamari also shelve gently into the sea so this is a very safe beach for families with young children, while watersports are very popular here with plenty of windsurfers and boats throughout the holiday season.
A rugged volcanic landscape rises up suddenly at this end of Kos island to provide a dramatic backdrop to the beach area and plenty of hillside trails for walkers.
