Platys Gialos, also spelt Platys Yialos, is located just four miles south of Mykonos Town and is one of the most popular of the south coast beaches of Mykonos.
Many of the taxi-boat caiques set off from Platys Gialos to ferry holidaymakers to south coast beaches like those at Paraga, Paradise, Super Paradise, Agrari and Elia.
Platys Gialos itself is very much a family beach, with a short but deep stretch of good sand and with substantial beach facilities along with sunbeds and umbrellas to rent.
There was once an attractive rocky headland to the west of Platys Gialos but this has now been pretty much swamped by a massive hotel development.
Not only is Platys Gialos beach well protected from the wind by the surrounding hills and the hotels and beach bars are built right up to the edge of the beach.
Behind the sands, there are also apartments, mini-markets, tavernas and gift shops galore, while Platys Gialos beach has the usual beach bars and beach tavernas.
A shallow shoreline makes Platys Gialos an ideal family beach and there is a wide range of watersports on offer.
Walks over the headland will take you to Psarou beach in the west and to Paraga beach in the east. There is also a frequent bus service from Mykonos Town.
